Sea Moss is a powerhouse for vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. In fact, it contains 92 of the 102 minerals that make up the body and required for proper function.

It is especially sought after for its high content of magnesium. A very vital if not key nutrient the body needs to function and to take up nutrients into the body during digestion”

My journey in understanding natural food led me to the beautiful discovery of Sea Moss otherwise called Irish Moss. I was always in the knowledge of Irish Moss, especially a drink made by prominent companies locally but never cared much for it because I never like that it was made and placed in a tin nor did I like the taste of how it was prepared.

I grew up seeing men tripping over themselves to have it and praised the elixir for its ability to revitalize or improve their libido. It wasn’t until I started my studies in natural local foods in Jamaica, that I understood the true nature of IRISH MOSS properly known as SEA MOSS.

One of the scientific names for Sea Moss is Chondrus Crispus another is Genus Gracilaria. It is important to note there are many different species of it. We will focus on these two (2) for the purpose of this article.

Incidentally, Sea Moss overall got the name Irish Moss during the potato famine in Ireland in the 1800s when Starving people began eating the algae that were found on the rocks and quickly realize its potency and ability to sustain them. The name was stuck.

To further clarify, this Sea Moss otherwise referred to as Irish Moss has the scientific name Chondrus Crispus. It grows off most European shores, particularly Ireland (hence the name Irish Moss), Great Britain, and Iceland, as well as the Atlantic coastlines of the U.S. and Canada in cold waters.

Genus Gracilaria a less leafy variation grows in warmer oceanic environments such as Jamaica (hence the name Jamaican Sea Moss) and the wider Caribbean, South America, Africa, and some parts of Asia.

The differentiation of the two (2) variations of species is to clearly show that Irish Moss and Jamaican Sea Moss are not the same but more so distant cousins and distinctly different.

In Jamaica, to covet the well sought-after superfood, divers would go further out at sea into the deeper parts of the rocky seafloor and reefs. Here lies a vast concentration in great abundance These areas tend to stay in abundance than that of the coastline as these parts are only accessible by a small population of divers.

The Sea Moss when harvested almost looks like blood veins/vessels especially those purple. Those of us who know much about herbs and vegetables know that once it looks like any organ/part of the body, it is designed by nature to heal, rejuvenate, or sustain that very part. It is no wonder why it is so effective for men’s libido as once the blood flows right, everything is nice 😊.

The Jamaican Sea Moss is usually seen in Gold, Purple, Greenish, Brownish depending on the amount of exposure it has to the sunlight.

Gold, purple, or any variation, the nutrient level remains the same. Nutrients found in Sea Moss is far too vast to list but, here are a few you might find interest to note:

  • Magnesium

  • Vitamin B2, B9,

  • Vitamin C

  • Iron

  • Zinc

  • Selenium

  • Beta-carotene

  • Bromine

  • DI-Iodothyronine,

  • Potassium

Sea Moss also has a probiotic effect during the digestion process. It contributes to the production of short-chain fatty acids effective in the digestion process, improving the health of the gut which in turn boosts immunity.

Sea Moss assists in:

  • Thyroid function – Sea moss contains a potent Iodine compound that in essence, assists in the treatment of thyroid disorder. It also assists the thyroid to make hormones that are essential in regulating: body temperature, metabolism, and other functions.
